Changing Profile Locks Network - Windows 7

Hi.

Long time user, first post.

NetSetMan 4.7.1 Non-Commercial Freeware Version. Windows 7 x64 fully patched.

Recently I have encountered locking up of my network when changing profiles manually. In Network and Sharing Center|Change adapter settings some properties become available. Disabling the network adapter (Network Bridge) does not unlock the network. Logging off and logging on again does not unlock the network. I have to force a restart of the pc because it will not shut down and restart automatically. The forced restart unlocks the pc, and the network now has the profile I first tried to set manually.

In most cases the profile change I require is to the Network Bridge, and with changes to DNS servers. In one case it is a change to gateways. In all cases the host IP and subnet are fixed.

I have tried an earlier version of NetSetMan 4.61 but that also has locked up the network on occasion.

I haven't seen any other similar reports of locked networks with NetSetMan either in this forum or with an internet search. Is there something I can do to fix this?

Re: Changing Profile Locks Network - Windows 7

Usually, when something stops working without any apparent reason, it might be a problem with a Windows update. Just yesterday we read about two broken updates for Windows 7 that can cause the network interface to stop working in Windows 7: KB4480970 and KB4480960.
You'll easily find more details in recent news articles, but here's an example:
https://news.softpedia.com/news/how-to- … 4486.shtml

You might want to look into some solutions regarding these two updates and additionally search for other recent updates that have been reported as problematic. In your case, it definitely seems to result in a driver problem, because the problem persists even after logging off and on again. We recommend updating or reinstalling the network drivers additionally.

The huge problem for us is to deal with unforeseeable problems like this. NetSetMan has to rely on a fully functional Windows system. If some functionality, driver or API is broken, then it might look as if NetSetMan is causing a problem, although it's just using a Windows functionality.

Please share your results to better help other users with the same problem.

Re: Changing Profile Locks Network - Windows 7

Many thanks for that advice.

I updated the ethernet driver, and re-installed the wireless NIC driver. According to the Softpedia article just reinstalling network drivers may overcome network issues arising from Windows updates, so if the issue is fixed I won't know if it was the updated ethernet driver or re-installed wireless driver that fixed it.

I'll see how it goes and report back here when I have further information.

Regards

Re: Changing Profile Locks Network - Windows 7

I haven't encountered any lockups over a week now of quite frequent manual profile changes. It looks as if your diagnosis of issues relating to network drivers was correct.

Thanks again for the assistance.
