Cannot switch to alternative profile with WinXP
Hello
Maybe not a bug ? I don't know.
I try release 4.6.1
I have created 2 simple profiles :
#0 is the standard profile for dynamic IP on local network
#1 is a personal profile for fixed IP on local network (IP=192.168.0.51 MASK=255.255.255.0)
With Win7-32bits, no problem. It works fine. The swicthing between the 2 profiles is OK and effective.
With WinXP-SP3, the switching from profile #0 to profile #1 is ineffective : The computer always remains on dynamic IP setting. No switching to fixed IP with netsetman when activating profile #1 although NetSetMan answers that the switching is OK with the notification "pass" in green text !
Looking at the real settings in using the Windows control panel shows that I am still on dynamic IP.
If I use the Windows procedure to switch to fixed IP, it works well.
Please can you tell me where is the problem ?

Re: Cannot switch to alternative profile with WinXP
RE : To help the reader of my last message, I noticed that when NeSetMan switches to the fixed IP profile, the Windows settings are actually set to the fixed IP values BUT the activation by NetSetMan to these settings is ineffective : The real IP of my computer remains to the last dynamic IP !
When using the Windows procedure, the swiching is done when clicking the "Close" button of the relevant window. After a few seconds, the IP swiches to the fixed IP.
With NetSetMan and WinXP, it looks like that the datas are well modified but that the equivalent "Close" button (Activate ?) of the Windows procedure is ineffective.
If this can help ...
With Win7-32bits, using exactly the same profiles, no problem !

Re: Cannot switch to alternative profile with WinXP
We received your support request here and via email. Please bear with us if we don't reply on weekends. It won't be faster if we receive the same question twice.
To analyze the problem, please post the activation log of the activation process on XP. You can access it at the bottom of the activation dialog.

Re: Cannot switch to alternative profile with WinXP
Hello. Thanks for coming back.
Here is the dialog box when trying to switch from profile #0 to profile #1 (sorry it is french !) :
[0:00] NetSetMan 4.6.1
Version Gratuiciel Non-Commercial
[0:00] Démarrer: DWL_2100AP (14:06:01)
[0:00] Démarrer: Connexion au réseau local
[0:00] Interface réseau trouvée
[0:00] IP: Démarrer
192.168.0.51 : 255.255.255.0
[0:00] Adresse IP: OK
[0:00] Masque de sous-réseau: OK
[0:00] IP: OK
[0:00] Passerelle: Démarrer
-
[0:00] Passerelle: OK
[0:00] Interface réseau - Rafraîchir...
[0:10] Interface réseau - Rafraîchir: OK
[0:10] Statut de la carte réseau: Démarrer
Activer
[0:12] Attendre: 5 sec
[0:17] Statut de la carte réseau: OK
[0:17] Terminer (14:06:19)
I confirm that your procedure sets correctly the properties of the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) to the desired fixed IP but DOES'NOT actually switch the IP which remains to the former dynamic IP.
This is confirmed by the "ipconfig" command which shows that the IP has not changed.
To actually switch, I must use the Windows procedure.
I have noticed that switching from profile #1 to profile #0 also leads to the same result : Computer's IP remains to the fixed IP and no dynamic IP is returned from the external router.
Regards
Gabriel

Re: Cannot switch to alternative profile with WinXP
After activating the profile (verify that it hasn't been applied correctly as you did before), please go to the Windows Network Connections dialog, right-click on the network adapter, choose Deactivate. Then wait for 10 seconds, right-click it again and choose Activate. Now see if the settings have been applied now. This would help us understand this problem on your XP system.

Re: Cannot switch to alternative profile with WinXP
Re :
Results :
- Starting with dynamic IP configuration
- Launching NetSetMan profile #1 (fixed IP = 192.168.0.51)
- Windows network settings shows that fixed IP is checked and filled with 192.168.0.51/255.255.225.0 BUT ipconfig shows that IP has not changed and is still with the former dynamic IP
- Deactivating the network with XP => No more IP
- Activating the network with XP => IP is now OK (=192.168.0.51)
Performing the same procedure to switch from profile #1 to profile #0 gives the same results : I need to deactivate and re-activate to get again the new dynamic IP.
Hope this will help.
Regards
Gabriel

Re: Cannot switch to alternative profile with WinXP
Thank you. It seems the reinitialization of the network adapter after changing the IP doesn't work on your system for some reason. We'll prepare a debug version for this case for you, so we can see what exactly fails here. Please be understanding that this might take a couple of days.

Switching between two profiles is ok in netsetman
In properties tcp/ip looks correct like in netsetman profiles
But the changes didnt take effect untill deactivate/activate network adapter manually
Thank you.

Re: Cannot switch to alternative profile with WinXP
Please be patient. We have an ongoing development of the software, so that new requests have to be scheduled around that. Depending on the current tasks and the complexity of the problem this can take several days.
@krIvo: If you still have this problem, then please post your activation log as well as requested. Thank you.

Re: Cannot switch to alternative profile with WinXP
We found the reason for this problem. Apparently, there's a problem with an API in Windows XP. We're currently working on a solution.

Re: Cannot switch to alternative profile with WinXP
We've implemented a workaround that is using an alternative API for this case for XP. It's a bit slower than the current one (that we'll be continuing to use in newer Windows versions), but at least it's going to work again for XP. Thank you for reporting and documenting this bug.
The fix will be available in the next version 4.7.0 that is planned for release in about 2 weeks.
