NetSetMan Pro does not start under Window 8.1 x64

Hello,
I've tried to reinstall the program twice, but I cannot make it working.

Configuration : (brand new laptop computer)
Windows 8.1 x64  16Gb RAM
NetSetMan Pro 3.7.1
Network interface : Intel Wireless-N 7260

I can install the program normally and if select to launch NetSetman at the end of the installation process, it runs and allows me to adjust the settings and create network profiles.
So far so good.

But:
If I reboot the laptop, there is no icon in the tray.
If I double-click on the Netsetman icon on the desktop, it does not open the application.
Immediately after trying to open NSM, the mouse cursor shows a blue spinning red circle flashing at a rate of about 1 second. ( busy spinning circle).
So some process related to NSM is running.
If I try to kill the process in the task manager, it reappears immediately.
If I want to shutdown or reboot the computer, it takes ages to do it

If I remove the NSM application and reboot, the spinning blue circle does no longer appears.

If I re-install NSM, disabling NSM autostart when Windows starts, I've no problem until I double click on the NSM icon.

Could you, please, help me to resolve that issue.
Thanks

Yves

Re: NetSetMan Pro does not start under Window 8.1 x64

Follow-up on that issue:

I've eventually found how to make it working.

Despite of the install directory option offered during the installation, NSM does not want to run from the d: disk in d:\Program Files\NetSetMan Pro\.

The problem with my laptop is that Windows is installed in a 64Gb SSD disk.

If I do not want to fill-up that fast disk, I must change the install directory to the normal 1Tb hard disk.

Is there a workaround for that issue ?
Thanks
Yves

Re: NetSetMan Pro does not start under Window 8.1 x64

Technically speaking it's completely irrelevant whether you install NetSetMan on C:, D:, X:, etc. It also doesn't matter whether that drive is another partition, an external hard drive, a network drive or a usb device. NetSetMan can also be used in a portable mode, meaning instead of a normal installation it can simply be extracted to any folder at any location.

For this reasons I can't follow your observation with the two different drives. Maybe there was some coincidence that made you believe that. Just to make sure I even set up a system according to your description and tried to reproduce the problem without any problem.

Here are a couple of tips:

  • Did you activate the NSM Service in the preferences? Make sure to try it out with the opposite constellation. Technically it makes a difference whether NetSetMan is used with or without the NSM Service.

  • Are you sure your second hard drive is fully available at the moment your system botted up? Maybe it needs a little longer so the command to run NetSetMan is performed while your drive isn't ready, yet? That's the only constellation I can think of where it would matter which drive is used for the installation.

  • "So some process related to NSM is running." What's it called? If it's nsmservice.exe it's a service that can't simply be killed. You can stop the service in the Windows service management or in the preferences of NetSetMan.

  • You can quickly find out if the problem is related to the NSM Service: If NetSetMan isn't started after a double click on its shortcut, try right-clicking it and choosing "Run as administrator". In that case the NSM Service isn't used and if NetSetMan starts up now then at least we've narrowed down the cause for the moment.

Re: NetSetMan Pro does not start under Window 8.1 x64

Hello,
Thank you very much for your analysis.

I will uninstall NSM from C: (SSD), re-install it in D: (HDD) and test a Run as Administrator + check the name of that service running that I was unable to kill.
I will post the result asap.
Regards

Re: NetSetMan Pro does not start under Window 8.1 x64

Hello,
I've uninstalled NSM from C: .

Don't know if it's normal, but netseman.exe remained in the directory and was still launched by the end of the boot. (I've selected to keep the ini settings in order to copy them in the NSM D: directory)

So I've erased the executable and I've removed the netsetman registry settings manually. I've rebooted again the machine.
To my surprise, now NetSetman can be installed in D: and runs with no problem.
I don't know what happened, but this topic could then be closed.

Thanks for your advice.

I don't quite understand what you mean by that. Or did you mean at the end of the uninstallation?

Do you remember which registry values remained after the uninstallation? Actually everything should've been removed.

In case you'll ever get this problem again, please let me know.

Re: NetSetMan Pro does not start under Window 8.1 x64

Yes, at the end on the uninstallation netsetman.exe was still present in the directory. Uninstall executed as administrator) from the C: or the D: drive with option to keep the ini setting enabled,

I receive a warning telling me that a few elements were not removed and could be removed manually.
Netsetman was still executed at each reboot.
I've tried also to uninstall NSM w/o keeping the ini settings with same behavior.

Registry settings:
I've made a search with "netsetman" and removed all occurrences.
Exemple of registry key removed manually :

HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/UFH/SHC
That key contains the netsetman.exe path to autostart. (Start Menu)

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Startup\Approved\Run32\NetSetman
REG_BINARY        02 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00

Great, thank you for the detailed description!
I'll analyze that and take care of it.
