Startup on Windows 8

Hi

I recently installed Windows 8 Enterprise RTM on my notebook and have installed NetSetMan on it which I have been using for years now. One thing I noticed is that the program does not startup when Windows does. I have selected all settings for this in options, I have set the program to run as administrator and have also set compatibility mode to Windows XP SP3.

With the above settings I have had no luck. Does anyone out there have an idea on how i can resolve this.

Hello

Ive just installed NetSetMan on my surface pro tablet running Win 8 and I have the same problem as below on initial startup that it doesn't display the change profile icon on the logon page. Once I logon and and then log back off again it does display the icon for the profile switching. I have only just downloaded NetSetMan so I would have the most recent version. Was this resolved in 3.5.0 or later ?

I don't think that's the same question. Guji wrote about the auto-run option - meaning that NetSetMan didn't show up as a tray icon on the desktop.

If I understand you correctly, you're talking about the logon-feature (allowing to switch profiles before logging on), aren't you?

I tried to reproduce the second scenario but wasn't able to do so. Notice that it might take a short time after booting thy system to show the logon-icon, because first all services have to be running.

Could you please describe your setup a little bit more? How's your system configured concerning the logon page? (auto-logon, user types, etc.)

Thanks for the quick answer, yes I was referring to the logon screen feature and though it could possibly be the same delay mentioned. Im using a surface pro tablet joined to a windows domain so requires me to press ctrl alt delete to begin with, im not sure what im doing wrong but the autoswitch functionality seems to not run as well. Ive installed the service and ticked all the boxes in properties for the uac elevation etc. I can manually switch profiles ok and it applies my settings

Could you please send me some screenshots or photos of your logon screen:
1. After booting
2. After pressing ctrl alt delete
3. After logging in and out again (<- if I got you correctly the icon is apprearing here)
4. Run "services.msc", search "NSM Service", open its preferences and take screenshots of the first two preferences tabs.

Those images will help me understand your constellation, because in my experience there are a lot of different logon combinations. For Win8 I might not even know them all. Please send the images by email. Thanks.

I can elaborate a little further with the behaviour. Ive just installed the win 8.1 preview and reinstalled netsetman from scratch (Everything in 8.1 behaviour wise seems to be the same in 8). Upon initial installation I went into the menu and installed the service as I had last time and enabled the switch from the logon screen.

I then logged off to see if the icon was on the start screen and it hadn't yet appeared even though the service was running (Confirmed in services.msc). Im not sure if it made a difference but I turned on the allow service to interact with desktop. I then rebooted and waited around five minutes and it still didn't show up. So I logged back on and then instead of logging off switched user, still no icon on the logon screen. I then poked around control panel, didn't change anything and decided to restart and upon restart it is now visible. So I cant explain the delay for it showing up but I think it was similar to what happened in the original install on the surface tablet

The other behaviour seems that I cant get the autoswitch to work. I only have two profiles with extremely basic settings

Home:

Linked to wifi WAP1
Sets IP to auto (This is only because I cant set auto dns without setting auto ip)
Sets DNS to auto

School:

Linked to wifi WAP2
Set Dns to static entries

For the testing I just turn the wap on or off to simulate moving between networks. Windows joins the networks ok, but netsetman doesn't seem to realise whats happening. Ive made sure its set in the autorun to be any available network and non unique ssid.

Hopefully this give a bit more info on the environment. At all times the manual profile swap seems to work

I'll need to do some detailed tests to see if I can reproduce your problem somehow.

Regarding the AutoSwitch feature: Your test doesn't indicate that the surrounding wireless networks are changing. Maybe you're expecting another behaviour than designed? Please have a look at the description:

Ill send of the pictures shortly. With autoswitch behaviour I was simulating the concept of going between wireless networks as in locations by turning on WAP1 with SSID1 which I though would apply the profile for ssid1 as it comes into range and the tablet connects to it. Then to simulate changing locations again I would turn off WAP1 wait for windows to show I was disconnected then turn on WAP2 and wait to connect to SSID2 which I though would make netsetman apply profile 2. Was I mistaken in that concept ?
