LLDP / CDP support feature request

Hello,

It would be great if LLDP/CDP support will be integrated.

If you hover over the icon in the system tray that it will display the port number and connected device + ip address.

This way you can see on what port you are connected. Its super handy to have if you connect on a walloutlet in a office and you know directly on what port you are connected.

Just like Hane LLDP agent or LDwin but integraded in this amazing tool.

Is this possible for the future?

Kind Regards,

Bas

Re: LLDP / CDP support feature request

It's the first request for this feature so we haven't analysed this functionality in detail, yet.
I did a short research now. To me it seems that this isn't an information that's available directly in Windows but has to be gathered creating an own client similar to the tools you've mentioned and using compatible server hardware. Is that correct?

In my understanding LLDP information is mainly meant to deal with dozens if not hundreds of cables connected to a server (in contrast to the use case that you've described). Could you please describe why this is an information that might be relevant on a regular basis for an end user? How do you use the information about the port of the walloutlet in your office?

Re: LLDP / CDP support feature request

Hello Ilja,

With the tools i mentioned its only software. You have to select the network card for the discovery. I think its correct that windows does not reconize the LLDP packets that is send on the network adapter.

To add a little bit info about the use.  Im visiting a lot of different customers. A lot of times they give me a network connection. When i program the network i need to program a switch port to a different vlan a lot. But many times there is no labeling on the walloutlet or the labeling is incorrect. So it is very handy to see directly on which port you are connected and put the port in a different vlan for some testing.

Sometimes i use the tool to trace the cable when its connected but not labled. Some customers asks me for these tools as well becouse they can be quite handy.

Re: LLDP / CDP support feature request

Wireshark installs a network driver (PCAP) to analyze the whole network traffic of your system. Every single network packet is sniffed and analyzed. The problem is, you'd need to do this all the time, because that information needs to be available the moment you look at the TrayInfo. And an even bigger problem would be to either write an own network driver for this task or use some external third party driver (which we can't do). I believe this is a little bit overhead for receiving the LLDP information.
So in the end it's simply the problem that this information isn't available in Windows stored somewhere but would require deep intrusion in the network traffic for this simple piece of information. I believe this would break the concept of a light-weight product like NetSetMan, I'm afraid.
